Rufiji River Camp offers trips through Selous Game Reserve by boat, vehicle and on foot. Boat safaris allow you to drift on the lakes and channels, approaching birds and animals closely. On your Selous safari in TanzaniaYou will pass huge pods of hippos wallowing in the water and see massive crocodiles sunning themselves on the sand banks. Especially during the dry season, many animals will come to drink from the river, which makes for spectacular game viewing.
Selous Game Reserve supports large animal populations that are best tracked by 4x4 vehicles or on foot. Elephants are present in increasing numbers and Selous boasts Africa's largest buffalo population, as well as herds of zebra, impala, Nyassa wildebeest and Lichtenstein's hartebeest. There are greater kudu, sable, eland and Maasai giraffe. Black and white colobus monkeys are found in the riverine forest.
Large prides of lion are frequently seen. Leopard, spotted hyena and cheetah are present, but harder to spot. Wild dogs, of which Selous has a thriving population, are an exciting predator to watch and observe. Tracking predators on foot in the Selous is an experience that you'll never forget.
Although the Selous is best known for its large mammals, it is equally celebrated for its abundant and varied birds. Over 440 bird species have been recorded in the Selous. Rufiji River Camp has a ‘fly camp’ which is situated on the shore of Lake Mzizimia -about 45 minutes drive from the main camp. The fly camp accommodates two to six guests in very close proximity to the bush.
The large tents are equipped with folding cot beds, mattresses, sheets, blankets and pillows. In front of the tents there are folding safari-style chairs and a table. A toilet tent with two long-drop-style toilets and a separate shower with an oil drum bush shower are supplied.
Meals in the fly camp are served in a lakeside gazebo and you can expect the same quality of cuisine as in the main camp, prepared by your own cook and served by your own waiter.
A vehicle with driver and an armed ranger and/or guide is based at the fly camp. On you Selous safari in Tanzania guides are able to offer you flexible excursions by vehicle or on foot using the fly-camp as the base. Fly Camping has to be booked in advance and children younger than 16 are not allowed.
