Set on a wide curve of the mighty Rufiji River, Sand Rivers Selous was originally built by Richard Bonham in 1984 who used this area of the Selous for his famous portered walking safaris, when the area was unknown. Sand Rivers Selous has a long-standing reputation as one of Tanzania's best camps, with luxurious accommodation, spectacular views and excellent guiding on an exciting Selous safari in Tanzania.
The intricate waterways and tributaries of the Rufiji River Delta attract a huge population of elephant, and are full of hippopotami and crocodile. The abundant Selous Game Reserve and area around Sand Rivers has an abundance of game, especially during the drier months when they are drawn to the river for water. However throughout the year you can expect to see good numbers of giraffe, impala, elephant and even lions and wild dog.
In the northern part of the Selous Game Reserve, on the banks of the Rufiji River, the stone and thatch Sand Rivers Selous Lodge is set under large Tamarind and Mahogany trees. All the rooms are open-fronted, and raised up on the banks of the river, all with amazing views.
Children:
This Tanzania game lodge in Selous Game Reserve welcomes children over the age of 8 years. Sand Rivers is not a suitable camp for very young children as all of the bedrooms and the lounge and dining area have open fronts with a drop down to the Rufiji River. Furthermore parents should also be aware that this camp is not fenced and wildlife can pass through at any time – children who do stay should not be left unaccompanied.
