The park's name is derived from the Tarangire River, the park's only source of permanent water. Tarangire is noted for its Elephant population and spectacular Baobabs of every shape and colour. In the dry season this river is the lifeline, attracting much of the game. Huge herds of Elephant, Greater Kudu, and Fringe-ear Oryx are what the park is synonymous with. In addition, Leopard, Lion and the African rock pythons often inhabit the trees.

Due to the low volume of traffic in the park, the game is 'wild', being unaccustomed to vehicles, this offers a truly unique experience on a Tarangire safari in Tanzania. Swala is the only water source for a 20 kilometer radius, attracting a vast array of animals, offering incredible game viewing from your verandah.
