The Ngorongoro Crater World Heritage Site was declared in 1978. This is the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world. The mineral-rich floor is largely flat, open and covered in grasses – so large herds of zebra and wildebeest graze here. The open plains are also home to herds of buffalo, Thomson's gazelle, Grant's gazelle, black rhino and tsessebe. Predators are often highly visible on the crater floor on an Ngorongoro safari. Lion, Spotted hyena, cheetah and leopards are often seen.

The Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge has the best views of any of the Crater's lodges and also has the quietest access route to the Crater floor. This road can be used for descents and ascents and it sees very little traffic compared to the road on the western side of the Crater. This also means that you can start your game-viewing on the opposite side of the floor of the Crater to most people, and as a result you have a few hours with relatively few other vehicles around.
