History of Arusha National Park in Tanzania:
Originally, Arusha National Park was part of a cattle farm, which had been started by the Trappe family in 1907 who had created a protection area for wild animals and birds. Half a century later, they sold their farm to Hardy Krüger, who transformed the main building into Momella Lodge, which became world famous when it featured in the classic movie 'Hatari!', starring John Wayne.
In 1960, in order to stop uncontrolled logging and deforestation, Krüger initiated the creation of the Ngurdoto Crater National Park. Seven years later, then incorporating Mount Meru, it was renamed Arusha National Park. Together with the wooded Mount Meru Forest Reserve on the outer mountain slopes, and the Ngurdoto Forest Reserve bordering towards the east, the park now forms a viable and coherent ecosystem.
