What to expect from this 8 day Selous Wildlife and Zanzibar Beach SafariA Selous safari in Tanzania is a definite 'must' if you want to travel the Southern Circuit of Tanzania. With its diversity of game and scenery; the Selous Game Reserve naturally appeals to a photographic lens, as the waterways, plains and wildlife reflect the changing colours of the sun. After your safari, relax on the tropical island of Zanzibar at Beyt al Chai, a romantic name around the history of the building, which, in years gone by, was a tea house. From here you will explore the Spice Islands Jozani Forest and submit to the temptations of Afro-Arabian cuisine. Days 1 - 3: Selous Game ReserveYou will depart from Dar es Salaam domestic terminal at 8:30 for Selous Game Reserve.
Covering almost 50,000 square km, the Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest areas set aside for wildlife preservation anywhere in the world. It accounts for 5% of the land mass of Tanzania, and yet all options for tourists are high quality, low-impact lodges that provide a high standard of accommodation.
After a short transfer from the airstrip to Sand River Selous, you will be welcomed and have time to enjoy a delicious lunch before departing on an afternoon game activity on your Selous safari in Tanzania.
Sand Rivers Selous is situated in the northern part of the Selous Game Reserve, on the banks of the Rufiji River. The rooms are open and airy, with en-suite bathrooms, flush toilets and hot and cold running water. All the rooms are raised up on the banks of the river, all with amazing views.
The Selous Game Reserve is a unique and unusual safari environment; a vast, thriving wildlife area of forests and woodlands around the lagoons, sandbanks and lakes of the Rufiji River. There is a large population of predators in Selous including lions, leopards, cheetah and the spotted hyena. You will also see buffalo, elephants, hippos, wild dogs and crocodiles. Other wildlife include the wildebeest, impala, waterbuck, zebra, eland, the greater kudu, sable antelopes, giraffe, baboon, vervet and blue monkeys, black and white colobus monkey. Over 440 bird species are documented residents of the Selous Game Reserve.
You will enjoy game drives, accompanied by highly experienced rangers, experts in their field on animal behaviours and who have a vast knowledge of Selous Game Reserve. Explore the main course of the Rufiji River as well as the Steigler's Gorge on a boat safari. Selous is one of the very few parks in Tanzania where walking safaris are allowed. A variety of long and short walks which begin from Sand Rivers Selous, or from a short drive away. Accompanied by an armed ranger, this is an experience not to be missed – close up and personal with the animals that inhabit the Tanzanian bush. Days 4 - 7: Zanzibar After breakfast and a short game drive, you will depart for the airstrip for your flight to Zanzibar, arriving at 10.50am. On arrival you will be transferred to Beyt al Chai located on the famous Kelele Square in Stone Town, Zanzibar. This transfer will take about one hour’s drive and you will arrive at the Hotel in time for lunch.
Beyt al Chai takes its romantic name from the history of the building, which, in years gone by, was a tea house. The cool reception at this hotel in Zanzibar immediately immerses you into a world of luxury. Every room is fully air-conditioned and features all the necessary creature comforts. The house is beautiful, taking decor from ancient times and blending it with comforts of the modern world. Little has changed in Stone Town in the past 200 years. It still consists of twisting and meandering alleys, fabulous carved wooden doors, busy bazaars, mosques and grand houses from a bygone era. Visitors can purchase lots of interesting items in the markets, including silk and also savour the incredible array of spices. Take the opportunity to visit the museums, see the sights, participate in water sports, go on the famous Spice Tour to the places where the spices are harvested and where cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla trees can be seen in abundance. Another popular excursion is to Jozani Forest, where the endangered Red Colobus Monkey can be seen; there are sunny nature walks which are a good way to view the wildlife. You will depart at 17:15 to fly back to Dar es Salaam arriving in time for your international flight departure.
