Find out About: Ruaha River Lodge Ruaha National Park What to expect from this 8 day Remote Tanzania Safari: Explore Tanzania's wilderness on this remote safari in Tanzania visiting two iconic parks – Ruaha and Katavi. Ruaha’s dramatic scenery and prolific game has enticed safari travellers for many years and to connoisseurs it is without doubt one of the most spectacular in Africa.
Katavi National Park is situated in the remote Western region of Tanzania and is the ideal retreat for an exclusive safari in Tanzania. Miles from anywhere, the park will thrill you with awesome wildlife sightings at every turn.
Both parks are different but both offer a true sense of wilderness which you will explore with experienced camp guides, whilst staying stay in unpretentious safari camps. Days 1 - 3: Ruaha National Park Depart from Dar es Salaam at 10:30 for the flight to Ruaha National Park. On arrival you will enjoy a game drive en route to Ruaha River Lodge.
The great Ruaha River which especially in the drier seasons will attract big herds of animals is the lifeline of Ruaha. Some of Ruahas' best features are found in this section of the park from massive rocky hills and outcrops to thick dense impenetrable bush all the way to more open grasslands in the east. The most striking features are numerous serpentine dry 'sand rivers' which criss-cross the park lined with dense riverine vegetation where many animals take refuge. Hippos rule the river and they can be seen sunning themselves along the river sandbanks on an early morning game drive.
Spend the days admiring all the ‘regular ‘animals such as elephant, huge herds of buffalo, giraffe, zebra, impala, eland, hippo, crocodile, lion and leopard. Assist your experienced guides in spotting the rarer less seen creatures, such as Sable antelope, Roan antelope, Lesser kudus and Grants gazelle.
Ruaha River Lodge is a rustic lodge situated in the edge of the Ruaha River. It is owned by the Fox family – who run it in an unpretentious and relaxed way. It offers very comfortable and spacious accommodation with great views of the Ruaha River. Activities at the lodge focus on morning and afternoon safari drives in 4x4 vehicles. You can also take a packed lunch and head out for the whole day to explore deeper into the park. Days 4 - 7: Katavi National Park Flights to Katavi depart at 0700 on Mondays and Thursdays. The flight takes just over two hours. On arrival you will transfer to Katavi Wilderness Camp and relax in your new surroundings before departing on an afternoon game drive.
Katavi National Park is centred on a large swampy grassland into which game migrates from a much larger surrounding hinterland. Game-viewing here is spectacular, especially the huge herds of buffalo and amazing numbers of hippo. The main focus for game viewing is the Katuma River and associated floodplains such as the seasonal Lakes Katavi and Chada. During the rainy season, these lush, marshy lakes are a haven for myriad water birds, and they also support Tanzania’s densest concentrations of hippo and crocodile.
Katavi Wilderness Camp is perfectly situated on the edge of a floodplain, ensuring a prime game viewing spot on your safari in Tanzania. From the comfort of camp you can watch the daily movements of the game. Katavi Wilderness Camp is very exclusive with six tents, luxurious in size and furnishings. The tents are set back amongst the trees that line the floodplain, providing refreshing shade. Days 8: Flight to Dar es Salaam After a full morning game drive ending at the airstrip (picnic lunch provided) you will depart at 13:45 to fly back to Dar es Salaam arriving late afternoon.
