What to expect from this 7 day Selous Adventure Safari:

Enjoy a sightseeing tour of Dar es Salaam and visit local villages enroute to Selous Game Reserve. Explore a game reserve and national park - Selous Game Reserve and Mikumi National Park. The Selous Game Reserve is named in honour of British hunter Frederick Courtney Selous and is famous for its Wild Dogs and Crocodiles. Mikumi National Park was listed as a National Park in August 1964 and shares its boundary in the extreme south, with the Selous Game Reserve. Together they make one unique ecosystem with some animals such as elephant, buffalo, wild dogs and zebras migrating between the two places. Experience these areas on daily game drives, walks and boating safaris.

Day 1: Dar es Salaam

On arrival at Dar es Salaam International Airport you will be met by your guide and assisted with your luggage. Transfer by car, for the 30 minute drive to your hotel. The Golden Tulip Dar Es Salaam is ideally situated on a coral cliff along the Indian Ocean, in a quiet residential area just a few minutes away from the city centre of Dar es Salaam. The white sandy beach of Oyster Bay adjoins the hotel and is ideal for sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling.

Day 2: Dar es Salaam to Selous Game Reserve

After breakfast check out your hotel and enjoy a sightseeing tour of Dar es Salaam City visiting the famous harbour, The National Museum, Mwenge Art Gallery, Askari monument, 'Nyumba ya Sanaa' Known as Mwalimu Nyerere Cultural Centre. Dar es Salaam (meaning ‘haven of peace') is Tanzania's major city and commercial centre. Located on a harbour on the Indian Ocean, it is the main port for Tanzania, handling exports of minerals, coffee, cotton, sisal and hides. In addition it is the hub of Tanzanian's national transport system as most major highways and all railways originate in or near the city. Local industries include trade, food products, textiles, cement, and pharmaceuticals.

Midday departure from Dar es Salaam to Selous Game Reserve (this drive will take approximately seven hours). You will travel through various southern coastal villages and visit a Coconut farm. Visit an African traditional village - Kibiti Village and enter the Selous Game Reserve via Mloka village road. On your Selous safari in Tanzania you will stay at Mbega Safari Camp which is situated on the riverbank of the Rufiji River. A authenic safari lodge that borders the Selous Game Reserve, you will stay in safari tents, built on wooden platforms, with ensuite bathrooms and a veranda.

Mbega Safari Camp offers specialized game wildlife watching, nature and walking safaris with an armed ranger and the unique experience of a night Selous safari in Tanzania. Night drives from the lodge provides you the opportunity to seek the nocturnal inhabitants of the region such as leopard and bush babies.

Day 3 - 4: Selous Game Reserve

After breakfast, enjoy a 4X4 safari in the Selous Game Reserve. Selous Game Reserve is Africa’s largest wildlife reserve which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1982. With an area of 54,600km, the reserve has enormous wildlife with Elephants, Buffalos, Hippos, Crocodiles, Wild Dogs, Lions, Leopards, Zebras, Impalas, Antelopes, Oryx, and over 500 species of birds. One of the reserve’s most striking features is the wide Rufiji River, which has one of the largest water catchments areas in East Africa, and offers some excellent opportunities for boat safaris. Return to the lodge for lunch and experience a boat safari in late afternoon on your Selous safari in Tanzania. Overnight stay at Mbega Camp.

After breakfast you can choose to do a walking safari or full day game drive with picnic lunch. Take a late drive to your next lodge - Sable Mountain Lodge. Sable Mountain Lodge is situated one kilometre outside the park's western park boundary near the Matembwe Gate. The lodge has a total of twelve rooms – a combination of natural stone bandas and the tented camp. All the rooms have en-suite hot shower and toilet, mosquito nets over the beds and 24hr electricity. Sable Mountain's dining area is open with good views and a small private plunge pool is ideal for the hot afternoons.

Days 5 - 6: Mikumi National Park

After breakfast check out your lodge and drive to Mikumi National Park, through the scenic Uluguru Mountains, via the town of Morogongo. If time permits, you will be able to shop for souvenirs here. Continue to Tan Swiss Hotel which is situated in the village of Mikumi (two kilometres west of Mikumi National Park). Tan Swiss is a family owned hotel and is set in lush gardens. Sixteen spacious rooms boast en-suite bathrooms and large verandas. The restaurant with its vibrant murals serves a wide variety of tasty meals to suit all palates. It is even possible to get traditional Swiss dishes as well as standard western and Tanzanian dishes.

Mikumi National Park abuts the northern border of Africa's biggest game reserve - the Selous – and is transected by the surfaced road between Dar es Salaam and Iringa. The open horizons and abundant wildlife of the Mkata Floodplain, the popular centrepiece of Mikumi, draw frequent comparisons to the more famous Serengeti Plains.

After breakfast enjoy your morning and afternoon game drive in Mikumi National Park. Mikumi National Park has a wide variety of wildlife that is easy to spot. Mikumi is the most reliable place in Tanzania for sightings of the powerful Eland, the world’s largest Antelope, and Wild Dogs. The impressive greater Kudu and Sable Antelope frequent the miombo forest covered foothills of the mountains that rise from the Mikumi National Park borders.
